At the current pace, by 2050 there will be more plastic in the oceans than fish. To try to combat this scourge, the Israeli start-up Tipa has invented flexible, compostable packaging which will have zero impact on the environment.
Biodegradable packaging
Each year, over 450-million tonnes of plastic are produced, which is the equivalent weight of 800,000 Airbus A380s! More than 40% of this plastic is single-use and only 9% is recycled. Sooner or later, the rest of it ends up in nature, causing ecosystems to deteriorate and endangering numerous species. To try to combat this scourge, Tipa has invented flexible, compostable packaging that has zero impact on the environment. The Israeli company has designed a fully biodegradable plastic comprising bio and plant-based polymers, rather than the traditional oil-based ones. In the space of 6 months, Tipa packaging breaks down naturally and is transformed into compost. In this regard, Tipa’s main focus is flexible packaging, which represents half of all the plastic waste produced around the world. Their products already have a global market so your next packet of crisps could well be fully biodegradable.
“TIPA” means ‘a drop of water’ in Hebrew, or something very small. Julia Schifter describes her company as a “tipa” to kickstart a major revolution.
