11 Sustainable cities and communities

Currently, half of all humanity lives in cities. Cities where ideas and goods flow. Cities which nurture culture and science. Cities that drive social and economic progress.

But in order for this trend to continue, when more than 880 million people live in slums, the United Nations has made ensuring universal access to sustainable and humane cities its eleventh sustainable development goal. Developing suitable basic services and housing at affordable prices is paramount. It includes safe and sustainable transport systems and energy supplies, while protecting the cultural and natural heritage of cities.

To achieve this, solutions must be found to face the challenges arising from rapid urbanization. Supplying water and managing waste, in particular, require innovative solutions. Even more so for developing countries.

What can you do? Use public transport or a bicycle to get around town.
