Onshore vs Offshore Wind: Which Powers the Transition Faster?
Onshore wind is cheaper and faster to build, while offshore wind is stronger, steadier and better suited to powering big coastal cities. Neither one wins outright: the fastest path to a clean grid uses both, and the balance between them is shifting as offshore costs fall. If you are new to the technology, start with how a wind turbine works.
What is the difference between onshore and offshore wind?
Onshore turbines stand on land, usually on ridgelines, farmland or cleared sites with road access. Offshore turbines are installed in the sea, fixed to the seabed in shallow water or mounted on floating platforms in deeper water. Offshore machines are larger (15 MW and climbing) because there is no road or bridge to limit how big the components can be.
Which is cheaper, onshore or offshore wind?
Onshore wind is one of the cheapest sources of new electricity in the world, with a levelised cost of energy (LCOE) that competes directly with solar. Offshore wind still costs more per megawatt-hour because of marine foundations, specialised installation vessels and more expensive maintenance, but its cost has fallen dramatically over the past decade and continues to drop.
Which produces more, onshore or offshore?
Offshore wind is stronger and more constant, so offshore farms reach capacity factors of 45 to 60 percent, against 35 to 45 percent for good onshore sites. That higher, steadier output is why coastal nations lean on offshore wind for baseload-like clean power, even though each turbine costs more to install and service.
Where does Australia stand?
Australia's wind fleet is overwhelmingly onshore today, spread across the windy south and south-east. Offshore is now arriving: the federal government has declared offshore wind zones, starting with Gippsland in Victoria and the Hunter in New South Wales. As those projects move from plan to construction, Australia will need the vessels, cranes and specialist crews that offshore work demands.
What does the difference mean for build and upkeep?
The split matters most after commissioning. Onshore turbines are reached by road and serviced by a crew in a van; offshore turbines need boats, helicopters and weather windows, which is why offshore maintenance is a specialist discipline of its own. Both routes share the same end-to-end story we trace in the life of a wind farm.
